History.

Established in 1926

We are a family business based in Llandrindod Wells with a depot in Llandybie. We were established in 1926 and therefore have just entered our 93rd year. The original founder was Albert Edward Gough and in 1966 it was taken over by the second generation Derek and Stuart Gough. During this time the business diversified and increased the fleet to eleven lorries. The business is now in the hands of the third generation, Simon and Michael Gough who took over in 1995 and have increased the fleet to 34. As the company has grown the brothers have become office based and have recently increased their administrative staff to keep up with the expansion. This expansion includes one full time and two part time members of the fourth generation.

Albert Edward Gough
Founder

Albert started the business in 1926 with just one lorry. He would have driven and done all the work behind the scenes. At this early stage the most lorries he got up to was three which worked for the council in the days of shovel on and shovel off. These would have been run out of Llandrindod wells quarry and Rhayader quarry. He retired in 1966 leaving his two sons in charge and to keep the family business going.

Derek Gough
Second Generation

Derek was heavily involved in the business from the young age of 17 and never really retired. He was a partner from 1966 along side Stuart Gough. The first lorry Derek bought for the business was a four wheeler,  a Dodge, CF0 444F, in 1967. Derek encouraged and supported his two sons through the business as they grew interested and went into business with the pair in 1992. Derek sadly passed away in 2012 but has left his mark on the business. We regularly find little reminders of his work in the office.

Stuart Gough
Second Generation

Stuart trained as a mechanic and only joined the business in the 1960's and became a partner with Derek in 1966. In 1992 the pair became partners with Simon and Michael, the third generation of this family business. Stuart left a few years later leaving Simon, Michael and Derek as the face of the company.

Michael is the Transport Manager for A E Gough & Sons Ltd and also manages a huge amount of business administration using his vast industry knowledge behind the scenes.
He loves the industry and plays an active role within the RHA, helping shape the industry for future years.
When the company went Limited in 2020 he became a director alongside his brother but in November 2021 Simon decided it was time to take a step back so Michael's wife Barbra joined him as a director to push the business forward.
In November 2021 Simon decided to step back from his directorship and cut down his hours. Simon is still working part-time Simons dedication and hard work over the years has been fantastic and he definitely deserves time to relax and take life a little more easy.
